Transportation in Langkawi

Langkawi runs on three wheels: rental cars, taxis, and ride-hailing. Cars are the smart-money choice, cheap, widely available, and the island. Taxis are everywhere but operate on fixed, non-metered fares. Agree the price before you get in or use Grab for transparent rates that are typically a fraction of the quoted taxi price. Motorbikes rent for pocket change but the roads are narrow and helmet enforcement is real. First-timers should know Langkawi has no public buses or trains. If you're staying outside Kuah or Pantai Cenang, a car isn't optional, it's your lifeline. Book at the airport or through hotel desks. International licences accepted. Skip the unlicensed "tour guides" touting at ferry terminals; they're just expensive taxis with a script. From the airport, the Grab pickup zone is clearly signed outside arrivals and usually costs less than half the taxi counter rate. If you're renting, all major desks are inside the terminal. The car park is a two-minute walk.
